“So, T, it’s Saturday! Where the heck is the rebus chapter, huh?”
Well, it pains me to report that I need to take an additional week for it. I’ve just finished one big crossword-related project, I’m up to my eyeballs in two others I’ll be announcing soon, and I really don’t want the quality of “Callin’ Them Squares” to suffer for all that.
To tide you over, however, let me share that project I just finished (with the able assistance of my longtime collaborator Jason Waltrip). It comes from my long-running science-fiction adventure comic, Fans, but you won’t need any special knowledge of previous episodes to read it. You will need either a fast connection or a little patience, though: it’s 6 MB.
Elsewhere on the Web, I announced the particular rules that we followed when constructing, er, creating this particular comic, which might qualify as a whole new genre of “cruciverbacomics,” if anybody follows its example. I could repeat them here, but you know what? I think you guys might have more fun figuring them out yourselves. This is awesome. From the visual symmetry to the initialism to using each word from the crossword in its appropriate space…I wasn’t sure what the heck was going on with the grid while the story was running, but it was worth the reveal. I nominate you for an Oryx.

Very cool! I’ve been immortalized before in graphic-novel form, but only incidentally (by a high-school classmate who wrote an autobiographical novel). The EPIC SOLVE panel might have to be my new Facebook pic.
