[Posting this for Merl. Enjoy!]
dear will,
my little birthday puzzle is about changing, which i thought was apt, since it starts happening a little faster as we inch toward geezerdom, especially now that you're a sexagenarian. (me too ... welcome to the club.)
here tis:
change WILLZ to TURNS to SIXTY, changing one letter each time and anagramming the result. thus, TEEN to FOGY can be done in 05 steps -- TEEN, rent, torn, fort, frog, FOGY. (if you can do it in 04 steps your old brain is working better than mine!)
here are the rules -- each step must be a common, uncapitalized word, and simply changing a letter without anagramming (as in FOGY to FOGS) is not allowed.
if you count TURNS and SIXTY as steps, the absolute fewest number of steps it can possibly take is 09, which, of course, is 60 upside down. (otherwise, why else would i be writing one-digit numbers this way?) so ... can you do it?
(happy birthday anyway!)
