16?. Collect the casino's take from each bettor (4) Don't guess you were wrong about "bettor", but now I have to ask for some crossers or a hint. I'm wondering if it is RE+A+P, but I wouldn't know why .. I'm probably not right. Wot? - Dave

I'm flummoxed by #16 also. I can make a case for HAUL as a double def. -- other than that I can't even come up with a 4-letter definition for either end of the clue let alone a wordplay. Bob

Like Dave, I'm seeing REAP, possibly with EA for each. The casino's take might be VIG or RAKE. "take from each." I suppose RAKE could be a double-def (collect the casino's take from each, and bettor).

Dan, you're right, though I'd split it the other way, collect/the casino's take from each bettor; I can see now how that could be problematic. Sorry!

It seems to me that splitting it this way wouldn't just be a shared root problem ... it's the SAME word/definition! But, here's rake in a new clue to get us moving ...? 17. Tenor getting in rake's way (5) Dave

Love the wordplay. It never occurred to me when I posted #19. IMO the clue could be workshopped a tad. "Costello is potty-mouthed" or "Potty-mouthed partner of Bud" both strike me as more complete thoughts. Bob
