Call for applications from AV Club Crossword

Message from American Values Club crossword editor Ben Tausig:

Hello,

The American Values Club, the largest by-subscription weekly crossword in the world, seeks to add one new constructor to its regular rotation. We warmly invite applications from everyone (details below).

In the interest of equal representation and also of producing a more welcoming vibe in the universe of publishing/intellectual life, we strongly encourage submissions from women and/or people of color. Though all applicants will be seriously considered, these will be given priority consideration. Applicants may be crossword veterans or totally new to the biz, young or old. The AVCX proudly uses a unique payment structure that gives constructors a percentage of profits; as we succeed, constructors are financially rewarded. As a result we now average over $300 per puzzle, the most of any outlet.

The AVCX is the former crossword of The Onion, now independent and online at avxwords.com. We’re more open to adult language than the mainstream puzzles, and pop culture references are welcome, though elegance, originality, and humor always come first. Above all, we seek to run the best crosswords.

Applications (as well as any questions) should be sent to datageneral@gmail.com no later than November 10th, and must consist of the following elements:

-An original, never-before-published crossword puzzle, including blank grid and clues. Please send as an image file (such as PDF or JPG), or in a standard crossword software format (such as .puz or CCW). The puzzle should be representative of what you would like to publish with us.

-A separate solution grid in any format. (Not needed if sending .puz or CCW)

-A one-paragraph bio describing crossword publishing history (if any — none is required), puzzle constructing specialty, and personal background.

-The email subject line should be “AVCX application” and all files should have your full name in the file name.

Sincerely,

Ben Tausig
