Grid: untimed; Meta: half an hour
Patrick Berry’s contest, “First Acts” — Conrad’s writeup
This month, we are asked, What two grid entries complete this puzzle’s theme? There were six theme entries:
- [Food fish that (despite its name) is a flounder]: LEMONSOLE
- [Ignore the knock of opportunity]: MISSATRICK
- [Loses its knot, as a shoelace]: COMESUNDONE
- [“Athena Parthenos,” for one]: GREEKSTATUE
- [Dish made from a quarter head of iceberg lettuce]: WEDGESALAD
- [Cooked in a wok]: STIRFRIED
Each of the six themers contained one of the seven days of the week (“time”) and one of the seven solfege notes (“scale”):
- LE(MON)(SOL)E
- (MI)S(SAT)RICK
- COME(SUN)(DO)NE
- G(RE)EKSTA(TUE)
- (WED)GESA(LA)D
- S(TI)R(FRI)ED
The missing day and note are THU and FA, leading to our contest answer THUS FAR. Short writeup because I’ve been traveling for four weeks. Solvers: please share your thoughts.
I’m one of those who submitted “WIDTH UVRAYS” because I didn’t see the musical notes. I knew that wasn’t quite right, though, so it’s my own fault!
Same! Still enjoyed the puzzle.
Neat bonus wrinkle to this puzzle: There are no extra stray solfege notes or abbreviated days anywhere in the grid except in the theme answers. No other REs or LAs or TIs. Patrick’s good.
