Oddities: Wednesday and Thursday NYTs

The next two New York Times crosswords have features that will be displayed differently in Across Lite vs. in print/PDF.

The Wednesday puzzle has a visual aspect you can see here in the blank grid. If you’d like the solving experience to be closer to what the constructor envisioned (and free of a long-winded Notepad explanation), you’ll want to get the PDF from the NYT Premium Crosswords page at the appointed time. If you don’t mind convoluted explanations, then carry on with the online version(s).

The print version of the Thursday puzzle is missing clue numbers in some squares that would ordinarily have them. In Across Lite and the applet, there’ll be numbers in those squares, but no clues (the clue field will contain a hyphen instead). So the clue numbers your blogger refers to may or may not match the numbering in the puzzle you do.

    Amy,

    I have a problem. The Notepad does not correspond to the printed puzzle shown in the Wordplay explanation or in yours. The broken line in Row # 3 is said to cover clues 5 through 7, but the broken lines in the printed sample go from under the black square above 18 through 5 and 6, not 7.

    Am I interpreting this wrongly, or should their explanation have been clearer?

    The Notepad refers to row and column numbers, from 1 to 15.

    I didn’t see one, Karen. I printed out the AcrossLite version and filled in the grid from Amy’s link above.

    there isn’t a PDF available, unfortunately. i resorted to printing the grid from the link on one page, and printing the clues from across lite on a second page.

    Probably too late to reply for puzzle fans, but when I looked this morning there was a pdf file here: http://select.nytimes.com/premium/xword/Jun2310.pdf. This link may not work for you because of the site design, which redirects one to a warning not to sign in but to sign up, unless one has already signed in. However, the puzzles page definitely has the link displayed prominently at present.
