Sports names in crosswords

sportsxwordWe’ve got Ade’s Washington Post crossword write-ups to teach us about the sports topics that aren’t already widely known to crossworders. The NY Times’ Victor Mather writes about the athletes who are practically crosswordese by this point—the ones with short names who appear over and over in puzzles. Will Shortz and Tyler Hinman are quoted.

And look: Mather’s editor didn’t use 2 Across (unlike this novel) in the article’s headline, “Where Ott and Orr Are Most Valuable: 15 Across, or Maybe 7 Down.” However! The caption for Arthur ASHE’s photo reads “3 Across.”
