Lydia Roth and Will Eisenberg’s contest, “Oh, That’s Just Perfect!” — Conrad’s writeup
This month we’re asked, What adjective is hinted at by this puzzle? There were six long theme entries:
- EGGSBENEDICT: [American dish with English and Canadian components?]
- BEEFBROTH: [Base for French onion soup]
- EVILGENIUS: [Mad scientist, maybe]
- AFTERIMAGE: [View from an overlook?]
- WORDGAMES: [Connections and Bananagrams, for two]
- IHAVENONOTES: [“That’s perfect!”]
The first five themers had a lot of As through Gs and the last acted as a hint: remove the (musical) notes. Once removed: the first five theme entries formed new words that mapped to other grid entries:
- IRE -> SNIT (EGGSBENEDICT)
- DICK -> ROTH (BEEFBROTH)
- EURO -> VILNIUS (EVILGENIUS)
- ADORN -> TRIM (AFTERIMAGE)
- LURES -> WORMS (WORDGAMES)
The first letters of the mapped entries solve our contest solution IDEAL. Solvers: please share your thoughts.
