Matt Gaffney’s Wall Street Journal contest crossword, “You’ll Learn” — Conrad’s writeup
This week we’re look for something schools aim to do. There were five long theme entries. Matt provided a clue in the final horizontal entry: BACK (clued as __ to school). Meaning: look for backwards schools in the theme entries:
- EMORY: P[YROME]TRIC: Designed to measure very high temperatures
- DUKE: GIV[EKUD]OSTO: Show some love for
- IONA: HUM[ANOI]DROBOT: Optimus, for one
- FISK: ROC[KSIF]TERS: Landscaping tools
- YALE: TORCHR[ELAY]: Olympic event that takes weeks
The schools spell our contest solution EDIFY. I found DUKE and YALE first, and backsolved the rest. Solvers: please share your thoughts.

I liked this one!! Timely and fun! Good one Matt.
YALE popped out at me first. Never heard of FISK, but easy to figure out. Fun puzzle!
