Fiend birthday contest for crossword constructors

On June 13th, Diary of a Crossword Fiend turned 16 and we’ve selected a winning puzzle from the many promising submissions celebrating our anniversary that we received.

    Great puzzle! I particularly liked 8D: Letters often accompanied by a red dot. Even after I got all the crosses, I still was thinking, “What in the world does THAT mean?!?” And then the lightbulb went off, and what seemed to make no sense now seems incredibly obvious. Which is the way a great clue is supposed to work!
